Did you know that 25% of adults in the Canada have reported experiencing lower back pain in the last three months? It can be really frustrating and debilitating, especially when you’re not sure what’s causing it.
Interestingly, adults and teenagers spend an average of 7.7 hours sitting each day. Whether it’s in the car, on a train or bus, at work or school, or even on the sofa, we tend to sit for long periods of time. If you find yourself sitting for extended periods, you might want to consider crossing your legs for added comfort. You can either rest a knee on your thigh, rest your outer knee on your thigh, or simply cross your ankles.
While sitting cross-legged or even sit on wallet may seem harmless, it could actually be the culprit behind your lower back pain. So, next time you sit down, be mindful of how you position your legs to potentially alleviate any discomfort.
Sitting cross-legged or sit on wallet frequently can lead to imbalances in your hips and lower back. This can result in a posterior pelvic tilt and poor alignment in your hips and spine, increasing pressure on your lower back. Additionally, it may cause you to adopt a poor standing position, with more weight on one leg, leading to muscle tightness and weakness. Sitting this way for extended periods could even contribute to conditions like sciatica, Lower cross syndrome (LCS) and trochanteric bursitis or lateral hip pain.
